For our Cameroon Country Office Kudu Zombo Programme, we are looking for a dynamic and committed Field Biologist Volunteer.

Location: Dipikar Island in Campo Ma’an National Park, where regular activities take place in the gorilla monitoring areas
Duration: one (01) year.
Mission of the Department
As part of the implementation of biodiversity conservation activities in the Kudu-Zombo cross-border landscape, a gorilla habituation programme is being developed in the Dipikar area within Campo Ma’an National Park.
This programme aims to promote a better understanding of the gorilla groups present in the area, support research and ecological monitoring activities, and create the necessary conditions for the future development of responsible ecotourism. The habituation process is based on a gradual approach, enabling the gorillas to tolerate human presence whilst preserving their natural behaviour.
To strengthen the involvement of local communities in the conservation of natural resources and to draw on their traditional knowledge of the forest environment, the programme is seeking to recruit a Field Biologist Volunteer for Gorilla Monitoring and Habituation.
Major functions
Under the supervision of the Primate Monitoring Officer, the Field Biologist Volunteer contributes to the research, tracking, day-to-day monitoring and gradual habituation of the gorilla groups targeted by the programme. They help to collect field data and contribute their knowledge of the forest environment and local wildlife.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Monitoring and tracking gorillas

Take part in the search for and location of gorilla groups monitored by the programme;

Assist the technical teams with daily tracking and monitoring activities;

Identify signs of gorilla presence (nests, droppings, footprints, food traces, vocalisations,...);

Supervise teams during gorilla group approach and habituation activities;

Report any significant observations concerning the animals or their habitat;

Take part in the collection of field data in accordance with established protocols;

Complete data collection forms under the supervision of technical supervisors;

Contribute to the monitoring of gorilla movements and observed behaviours;

Report any illegal activity observed in the monitoring area (poaching, traps, illegal exploitation of natural resources, etc.);

Take part in ecological monitoring activities where required;

Help raise awareness amongst community members about the importance of conserving gorillas and their habitat.

Help maintain field equipment and materials;


Contribute to the smooth running of the camp and ensure compliance with health and biosafety rules;

Carry out any other tasks related to the programme’s activities as assigned by management.
Profile:
Required Qualifications:

Hold at least a BEPC qualification;

Have practical experience in the forest as a tracker, community eco-guard, research assistant or local guide;

Have previously taken part in monitoring activities involving gorillas or other large mammals.
Required Skills and Competencies:

Good knowledge of the forest, local wildlife and the areas frequented by gorillas;

Knowledge of gorilla signs and tracking techniques is a major advantage;

Good physical fitness and the ability to work in the forest;

Motivation for conservation work;

Ability to work as part of a team in conditions that can sometimes be difficult;

Ability to read and write French;

Availability for extended periods in the forest;

Membership of a community living near Campo Ma’an National Park;

Willingness to learn and develop skills in primate monitoring.
