Implementation Research Officer (Contractor)

ABOUT CHAI

CHAI Cameroon, in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health and key national and international partners, aims to implement a mental health initiative focused on improving mental health outcomes for young people living with HIV (YPLHIV) in Cameroon. The Foundation Phase of the project is focused on building the evidence base and implementation systems needed for a subsequent scale-up phase, with the goal of achieving national integration of a lay-delivered mental health intervention within Cameroon’s public health system.

CHAI Cameroon is seeking a motivated and highly skilled individual to serve as Implementation Research Officer on a full-time contractor basis. The Officer will lead the project’s research, evaluation, and health economics activities, and will play a central role in designing the study framework for the project’s next phase and in preparing the associated research proposal. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Programme Lead and in close collaboration with the Principal Investigator. This position is based in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

•      Lead the design and application of the project’s implementation science and evaluation framework, ensuring rigorous, systematic assessment of project processes, outcomes, and implementation dynamics.

•      Coordinate the development of the study protocol for the project’s Impact Phase, encompassing study design, data collection approaches, sampling strategy, and outcome measurement.

•      Establish and oversee the project’s monitoring, evaluation, and learning systems, ensuring timely data collection, management, quality assurance, and reporting.

•      Lead the project’s health economics activities, including project costing, cost-effectiveness analysis, and the development of an economic evidence base to support scale-up recommendations to government and donors.

•      Coordinate the preparation of the Impact Phase research proposal, working closely with the Programme Lead and Principal Investigator to produce a high-quality submission.

•      Ensure the rigour, integrity, and ethical compliance of all research activities conducted under the project, in line with national and international standards.

•      Prepare and contribute to donor progress reports, scientific manuscripts, and policy briefs.

•      Support stakeholder engagement activities related to research design, data use, and evidence dissemination.

•      Represent the project at relevant scientific and technical forums at national and international levels.

•      Perform any other duties as reasonably assigned by the supervisor.

Required

•      Postgraduate qualification (minimum Master’s level; doctoral degree an advantage) in public health, epidemiology, health economics, implementation science, or a closely related field.

•      Demonstrated experience designing and implementing health research or evaluation projects, preferably in low- or middle-income country settings.

•      Knowledge of implementation science frameworks and experience with hybrid effectiveness-implementation or pragmatic study designs.

•      Proficiency in health economic evaluation methods, including cost-effectiveness analysis and project costing.

•      Strong quantitative and analytical skills, with experience using relevant data analysis tools.

•      Excellent scientific writing skills with a demonstrated track record of contributing to grant proposals, technical reports, and peer-reviewed publications.

•      Demonstrated ability to work independently, set priorities, and deliver high-quality outputs within established timelines.

•      High personal integrity and commitment to CHAI’s mission and values.

•      Proficiency in English; working knowledge of French an advantage.

Desirable

•      Experience with mental health research or projects, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

•      Familiarity with HIV-related programming, especially for adolescents and young people.

•      Experience contributing to major international donor research proposals.

•      Knowledge of Cameroon’s health research environment and regulatory landscape.

•      PhD in Anthropology, Social Sciences, Psychology, or a related field, or an MD with specialization in Psychiatry, with a strong research background.
