Position Summary

CHAI Cameroon, in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health and key national and international partners, aims to implement a mental health initiative focused on improving mental health outcomes for young people living with HIV (YPLHIV) in Cameroon. The initiative aims to develop, evaluate, and scale a lay-delivered mental health intervention that is integrated into Cameroon’s public health system. This is a Foundation Phase of a longer-term initiative with ambitions for national scale.

CHAI Cameroon is seeking a motivated, skilled, and mission-driven individual to serve as Mental Health Technical Officer on a full-time contractor basis. The Officer will serve as the project’s primary mental health technical lead, providing clinical and technical expertise across the project’s intervention activities, community engagement processes, and stakeholder coordination functions. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and in close collaboration with the Programme Lead. This position is based in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

Scope of Work

Serve as the primary mental health technical lead for the project, providing clinical oversight and technical direction to ensure evidence-based, contextually appropriate programme delivery.

Lead the development and adaptation of a lay-delivered, group-based mental health intervention for young people living with HIV, coordinating closely with the project team, lived experience experts, and technical partners.

Design, coordinate, and support the delivery of training material for lay health providers, including the development of training curricula, supervision frameworks, and quality assurance mechanisms.

Establish and manage participatory engagement structures for young people with lived experience of HIV, ensuring their meaningful and structured involvement throughout the project.

Develop and maintain strong working relationships with government counterparts, technical partners, and civil society organisations involved in mental health and HIV service delivery.

Coordinate the project’s stakeholder engagement activities, including preparation and facilitation of technical working group and coordination meetings with national and international partners.

Represent the project at national technical forums, government coordination meetings, and relevant policy discussions on mental health and HIV.

Support monitoring of programme activities, contribute to progress reports, and assist in the preparation of scientific and technical outputs.

Perform any other duties as reasonably assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Required

Advanced degree (minimum Master’s level) in clinical or counselling psychology, psychiatric nursing, mental health, public health or a closely related discipline.

Demonstrated experience in the delivery, adaptation, or evaluation of evidence-based psychological interventions.

Experience working on mental health or psychosocial support programmes in low- or middle-income country settings.

Strong facilitation, training, and capacity-building skills, with experience engaging diverse stakeholders.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship management skills.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and deliver results in complex, fast-paced environments.

High personal integrity and a commitment to CHAI’s mission and values.

      Fluency in French and English.

Desirable

Experience with HIV-related programmes, particularly those targeting adolescents and young people.

Familiarity with participatory research methods and lived experience engagement approaches.

Experience in government liaison or multi-partner coordination at national level.

Knowledge of Cameroon’s health system, policy environment, and mental health landscape.
