1. MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT
| As part of ongoing biodiversity monitoring and conservation efforts, WWF Jengi TNS seeks to strengthen the capacity of indigenous people and local community in wildlife monitoring through the use of camera traps and acoustic monitoring technologies. These tools play a critical role in assessing wildlife presence, abundance, distribution, and ecosystem health, while providing valuable information to guide conservation management decisions. To support these efforts, WWF International through CCO intends to recruit an intern who will receive practical training and hands-on experience in the installation, operation, maintenance, and data analysis of camera traps and acoustic monitoring units. |
2. MAJOR FUNCTIONS
| The objective of this internship is to build the technical capacity of a young conservation professional in wildlife monitoring techniques, including the deployment of camera traps and acoustic monitoring units, as well as the processing, identification, management, and analysis of the data generated by these technologies. |
3. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
| Specific Objectives: The intern will be trained to: Install and maintain camera traps in accordance with established monitoring protocols.Install and maintain acoustic monitoring units in selected monitoring sites.Retrieve, organize, and securely store monitoring data.Identify wildlife species captured by camera traps.Identify and classify acoustic recordings of target wildlife species.Use relevant software for image and acoustic data processing and analysis.Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and monitoring summaries.Support field teams in biodiversity monitoring activities. Under the supervision of the Technical Adviser, the intern will: Field Activities Participate in the planning and deployment of camera traps and acoustic monitoring units.Assist in selecting appropriate monitoring locations.Install, test, and maintain monitoring equipment.Conduct routine field visits for equipment inspection and data retrieval.Ensure proper documentation of monitoring sites using GPS and field data sheets. Data Management and Analysis Download, organize, and archive images, videos, and acoustic recordings.Assist in species identification from camera trap images and videos.Assist in the identification and classification of acoustic recordings.Maintain monitoring databases and metadata records.Conduct preliminary analyses and prepare data summaries.Support the production of maps, graphs, and monitoring reports. Capacity Development Participate in training sessions on wildlife monitoring methodologies.Learn and apply standard protocols for camera trapping and acoustic monitoring.Develop skills in relevant software applications for biodiversity monitoring and analysis. Expected Deliverables The intern will be expected to produce: A field activity log documenting monitoring activity.An organized and updated database of camera trap and acoustic monitoring data.Species identification records from images and acoustic recordings.Monthly progress summaries.A final internship report summarizing activities undertaken, skills acquired, results obtained, and recommendations. |
4. PROFILE
Required Qualifications
| Essential Requirements Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, Forestry, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Zoology, or a related field. Strong interest in biodiversity conservation and wildlife monitoring. Basic knowledge of wildlife ecology and species identification. Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications. Willingness to work in remote field conditions. Desirable Qualifications Previous experience with camera traps or acoustic monitoring equipment. Familiarity with GIS applications and biodiversity databases. Knowledge of data analysis software and wildlife monitoring tools. Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams. |
